Who Said You Need a Degree To Be Successful?

It’s a common misconception that you need an education to make money and sustain yourself, that you need to attend a university to be something in this world. Although education is encouraged, it’s not necessary. The reality is that many people cannot afford to attend college. Education is expensive. In retrospect, if they do pursue a degree, most end up drowning in student loan debt. As the saying goes, life is what you make it. You can work hard and become successful even without a degree. Here are some ways you can make this possible.

Start a Business or Invest

Starting a business sounds intimidating, but in reality, a business is just something that can make you income no matter how big or small. This business can be selling your clothes or other goods you don’t use anymore. This alone may not be enough to be your only source of income but will make a difference in the long run. Another feasible opportunity would be to invest the money you have. This could be investing in stocks that will increase in value over time or invest in real estate. Real estate can bring you passive income each month without having to do a lot of work. These are great options to supplement your income.

Just Do It

Most success comes from experience. Try to apply for positions that don’t require a degree. There are many positions available you do not need college for. You can search for jobs that don’t require a degree here. Through gaining first-hand experience and knowledge you will open more doors for yourself in the future. Also, if you already know what you want to do, start pursuing it. Nothing is standing in your way. Success is a mindset. All you need is the determination to work hard and accomplish the goals you set.

Free Certifications

College allows students to build their resumes and learn skills that can make them more competitive in the job market. Certifications can provide the same thing. Click here to see a list of sites that have free certifications. There are certifications in almost every field and skill set you want to build upon. For example, if you are interested in construction you can get certified in civil site work, construction manager, etc. This will build your resume and help you stand out.

Expand Your Network

Sometimes it comes down to who you know rather than what you know. Reach out to people who are in the career you want to be in. They can provide useful information on how to break into the industry or even let you know when they have positions available. Attend networking events to start talking to employers and get your name out there. Being outgoing will help a lot as employers want goal-driven, positive employees. LinkedIn is a great tool to message individuals outside your network. Just remember the more people you reach out to, the higher the chance you will have at receiving a response.

College doesn’t define success, you do. As it is, there are plenty of accomplished individuals who did not earn a degree. Steve Jobs, the founder of Apple, dropped out after one semester. Ellen DeGeneres also dropped out after one semester. She is now a comedian, hosts her own show, is a writer and so much more. Steve and Ellen are both great examples of how you can pave your own path just by hard work and persistence. Another example is the famous chef Rachael Ray. She did not attend college nor culinary school. She just practiced in her own kitchen to build the skills she needed to be successful. If you work hard, you can be something in this world no matter what anyone tells you.
